The S-41 recesses into the desktop rather than sitting on it, so the intake ends up level with the working surface. That is the right height to catch filings as they fall, before they drift into the room or settle on the station. This is the black finish.
It also frees the desk. On a station where the client rests their forearm for an hour, a unit flush with the surface is the difference between a comfortable position and working around an obstacle.
